Thinking about getting braces but don't want to spend too much on them? The cheapest orthodontic treatment is done by orthodontic students.

It cost a lot of money and time for receiving orthodontic treatment. Cheap braces are normally those traditional metal braces. It is also important to find out what sort of dental braces insurance is available. The teeth and gums should be in perfect condition before getting braces on. On top of orthodontic treatment, consider some extra fees, such as replacing old fillings, X-rays, extractions, and a deep cleaning.

How Much Do Braces Cost?

In the U.S., two years of orthodontic treatment (with full traditional braces) costs at least around $6,000. Prices will vary with different types of dental treatment, dental insurance plans, the dentists and areas. But the least expensive orthodontic treatment is at the College of Dentistry. When orthodontic students, who are all qualified dentists, are being trained, they need to practice on real patients. They treat real patients under the close supervision of experienced faculty orthodontists. As the orthodontic students have to get faculty approval, the process is rather slow but they will explain things properly and it is easier to get a second opinion.

Dental Braces Insurance

Ask whether the orthodontist offers a variety of payment plans so that patients can fit the fee for treatment into your budget, according to Pam Paladin, Consumer Relations Manager of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). “Some adults even have dental insurance that includes orthodontic benefits, which will offset some of the fees,” she said.

Some companies offer dental reimbursement plans. “The least expensive way is through a job,” said Gerald Nelson, DDS, University of California, San Francisco, Orthodontic Division. Check out with human resources whether there is a special orthodontics discount program.

Before Putting Braces On

After seeing an orthodontist for the first time, a patient typically has to come back to see the dentist to have a deep cleaning, replace old fillings, or remove some teeth before putting braces on.

“If we move teeth when there is tartar present, infection can result, damaging the bone around the tooth root. So deep cleaning is important. Replacing old fillings is important if the filling is defective. Otherwise they will be okay to retain,” said Dr Nelson.

Getting Affordable Braces in a Developing Country?

Braces are much cheaper in developing countries, such as Mexico. But what about regular adjustments?

“Perhaps fees in Mexico would be less if you went through the entire treatment there. Putting on braces in Mexico and then coming here does not solve the problem. When you come to an orthodontist with braces on, they may have to completely change things, since the braces are not all the same, or the previous orthodontist may have not placed them ideally. They won't discount the fee, as they still have to do all the work,” said Dr Nelson.

If a patient wish to have braces in a developing country, such as Mexico or the Philippines, it is probably better to stay during the whole treatment period there.
